The Experience
This is “the loveliest square mile in Lakeland” according to Alfred Wainwright. High peaks encircle you, sheep graze the fields, the river Derwent potters past. The view from the top of High Seat is one of the best in the Lakes, with Derwentwater sparkling under a vast sky.
Big windows downstairs frame majestic views. You get binoculars, the daily papers, afternoon tea in front of roaring fires or out on the terrace in summer. Bedrooms are great value for money, with warm colours, super beds, smart bathrooms, a sofa if there’s room. Some open onto terraces, several have small balconies, all have the view.
Wake to Cumberland sausages, fillet of haddock, artisan sourdough, eggs with soldiers, local Farrer’s coffee and blended teas. Chef Christopher Standhaven has a good reputation for his food using lots of local produce so it’s worth booking a table for dinner too.
Spend time in nature, watch out for red squirrels.

Location
The neighbourhood
Keswick (20 minutes) is the nearest town – a bustling market town with shops, cafés and more outdoor gear shops than 'soft Mick' – ask a local... Drive 10 minutes to Honister Pass to visit the slate mine and an exciting café. Hop on a boat across Derwentwater and visit the wonderful walled garden at Lingholm Kitchen. Walk into the mountains surrounding you, swim, paddle board, fish in the lake.
Local points of interest from Jess Dowell
- Set in two acres of woodland, the Borrowdale Gates Hotel is flanked by the dramatic peaks of Scafell Pike and Skiddaw and lies in the mouth of the lush Borrowdale Valley – a truly mesmerising location, with stunning walks for all levels.
- Close to the shores of Derwentwater, guests enjoy a variety of lake activities, including sailing lessons, rowing boat hire and lake cruises.
- Whinlatter Forest – Beautiful forest trails suitable for walkers and mountain bikers of all abilities, children’s adventure area, mountain bike hire, and Go Ape, with high platforms, swings, zip wires and rope bridges.
- Keswick & Cockermouth Golf Clubs – Stunning mountain courses. Bassenthwaite Lake and Ospreys – The Lake District’s first ever wetland nature reserve and famous as the nesting place of the magnificent osprey.
- The Theatre by the Lake – Cumbria’s only year-round professional producing theatre. Watendlath Trout Fishery – No permits required for this weekly stocked tarn close to the hotel.
- Honister Slate Mine – Just up the road; watch slate splitting that has changed little in 300 years. Lakes Distillery – Just a few miles down the road, try out Lakeland's first whiskey distillery tour.
