The Experience

This tranquil 1820s country house has retained much of its original character, and is surrounded by mature gardens with no immediate neighbours so feels private. Jamie and Jenna run the place along with their team of friendly staff.

Bedrooms are comfortable and generous in size, some with patios or balconies, one with a hot tub. This is the kind of place where dogs aren’t just tolerated but welcomed, and there are several dog-friendly rooms with wooden floors and private garden areas.

Settle next to a roaring fire in the lounge with a good book and a drink from the bar, head to the Brathay Lounge for dog-friendly dining, or treat yourself to a lavish afternoon tea or a tasting menu in the three AA Rosettes fine dining restaurant, run by the talented chef, Aaron Lawrence. Ambleside is a 10-minute walk for a wide selection of shops, restaurants and art galleries, and Lake Windermere is just a short stroll further.

Reviews

Rothay Manor Hotel was the perfect base for our stay in the Lake District. A short stroll from Ambleside and within easy reach of lots of walks (and a very muddy Rothay Park parkrun!) we loved spending time outdoors and then returning to the cosy warmth of our spacious room. Breakfast was also absolutely delicious - high quality and generous, in a beautifully decorated dining room with views of the grounds.

Keziah, Bristol

Lovely small hotel with friendly, efficient staff serving outstanding food. Comfortable rooms, with an extension opening in early 2022 of eight more rooms with terraces and a new reception and entrance. Some noise from the busy road.

Diane, Woburn

We had a lovely stay at the Rothay Manor Hotel. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the service was impeccable. We loved it so much we have booked to return later this year!

Jane, Chelmsford

Love the ambiance of the places - the bedrooms have style and great comfort. I would wish for nothing more than what is offered at this timeless hotel.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are easy walks leaving from the hotel, Ambleside is a 10-minute stroll and it's about 15 minutes walk to the pier for cruises on Lake Windermere. Outdoor activities abound, from paddle-boarding on Coniston and wild swimming in smaller lakes and hiking or biking in Grizedale Forest, half an hour away.

Local points of interest from Jamie & Jenna Shail

  • Lake Windermere is just a 10minute walk along a beautiful stretch of the River Rothay.
  • Ambleside town centre is just a 5-10minute walk, here you will discover historical sites, beautiful areas of woodland and astonishing waterfalls.
  • For us the Lake District is all about getting outside, and there are so many amazing walks from the doorstep, from short ambles to all-day expeditions.
  • Ambleside is a food-lovers dream. At Rothay Manor you can dine in our 3 rosette awarded fine-dining restaurant or our Brathay lounge for a more casual experience.

  • The un-spoilt English Heritage, and sheer beauty of our surroundings. Come rain or shine, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, there is never a bad time to be in the Lake Distict!

Introducing

Jamie & Jenna Shail

Jamie and Jenna used to run skiing holidays in France, but returned to the Lake District as they are passionate about the area and love to spend as much time as possible outdoors with their two spaniels. They’re also passionate about good food, and always dreamed of owning a fine dining restaurant. They aim to make their guests feel at home as soon as they walk through the door, and achieve this by having a friendly team who have the same dreams and goals.
