The Experience
A Derbyshire longhouse in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre country built by a man called George Eyre. The position is unbeatable – field, river, hill, sky – but the star of the show is Vivienne, a dab hand at spoiling guests rotten. There’s a big sitting room with maps for walkers, a dining room hall for hearty breakfasts, and tables and chairs scattered about the garden. Back inside, bedrooms vary in size, but all have super beds, goose down duvets and stunning views; a couple have doors onto the garden, the suites have proper sitting rooms. Fantastic walks start from the front door, Castleton Caves are on the doorstep and Chatsworth is close.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Vivienne Taylor
- The Peak District is a walker’s paradise and access to Lose Hill, Mam Tor, Win Hill and Kinder Scout can all be made directly from Underleigh House. A few miles away are the impressive ‘edges’ of Curbar, Froggatt, Stanage and Derwent to explore.
- If culture is more ‘your thing’ the delights of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall, Bolsover Castle and Lyme Park are all within easy reach. Also Derwent Valley Mills - a World Heritage site and the birthplace of the industrial revolution.
- For history buffs, quaint towns and villages such as Eyam (the 'Plague Village'), Castleton (with its famous Peveril Castle and Blue John stone), Tideswell and Bakewell (with its Bakewell Pudding) will appeal, each having their own special associations.
- Experience unique Derbyshire ‘well-dressings’, Castleton's underground show caves, Buxton’s summer festivals, or simply hire a bike and cycle along one of many traffic-free trails eg the Monsal Trail, Tissington Trail or the Derwent reservoirs.
- Visit iconic film locations in the area (particularly Lyme Park, Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Stanage Edge). Step in the shoes of Charlotte Brontë and find places in and around Hathersage that featured in her classic novel ‘Jane Eyre’.
- Try a bit of adventure with some rock climbing, mountain biking, underground caving, abseiling, traditional gliding, hangliding and paragliding. All these popular pursuits are available in the Peak District.
