The Experience
Families will enjoy getting stuck in on the farm collecting eggs, feeding the pygmy goats and making friends with the donkeys. Owner Andrea will leave you her famous lemon drizzle cake, plus a basket of logs to load up the wood burner.Outside there’s a table and chairs and space to play but no garden – unnecessary with the patchwork quilt of fields to romp in. Bring your bikes and cycle along the narrow (and quiet) country lanes – there’s a lockable shed to keep them in when you’re not pedalling. The Peak District is yours to marvel at, with a number of National Trust properties a half-hour drive away: Chatsworth House hosts festivals in the summer, or you could try orienteering at Ilam Park. Active families can walk straight from the doorstep to Dovedale’s Stepping Stones; pack up a picnic and make a day of it.

We were a group of 4 adults staying in Winnow Stables. The accommodation was very clean, spacious and well equipped. The stables were nicely furnished and modern. The beds were very comfortable. There was parking for 2 cars right outside the entrance to the stables. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. I met the goats, and looked at the donkeys and sheep. We were attending the Damgate wedding venue next door which was only a minute’s walk away. Andrea the owner was very friendly and prompt with my email enquiries and the whole booking process went smoothly.

Our third visit which speaks for itself. If you are in The Peak District for a walk this place is perfect. You can take a stroll up on the hills or if you are happy to do 5-10 miles in a day you can set off in any direction for great walks including Dovedale and not need to drive. The kids loved making dams in the river at Wetton Mill. We will be back again.

Delightful accommodation in an idyllic yet accessible location. Walks to Dovedale from the front door were a highlight. The welcome hamper was worth the extra with excellent local produce, and we also had a great afternoon tea. Great hosts - including the animals!

We very much enjoyed our stay at Winnow Stables. It was well furnished, warm, quiet and comfortable. Parking was right outside our cottage. A great location for exploring the Southern Peak. Only thing we would have changed was a lowering of the height of the bales stored outside our windows to the north - to improve the view of the countryside.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Winnow Stables. It was a beautiful, well equipped warm and comfortable place in which to base our few days away from home in these unusual times. The cottage was extremely clean and the extra touches were very welcomed. We would certainly recommend to family and friends.

Winnow Stables is a comfortable and stylishly simple cottage in a remarkable location, with a view to the north of Witton Hill and to the south the farmyard tricked out with real goats and chickens! Paths lead in all directions from the door. It is silent and dark at night. A small log stove piggybacks on the super-competent heating system. The beds (and chairs) are comfortable and the kitchen is a pleasure to work in. You are bound to have a happy and memorable stay here in some of the loveliest countryside available to humanity.

We enjoyed a very relaxing and comfortable weekend at Winnow Stables, a beautifully renovated stone farm building. The hosts are very thoughtful and have struck the right balance of giving guests space, but being there if needed. The animals are also a delight and it’s lovely to watch the antics of the goats and the chickens and enjoy a good chat with the donkeys! The location is also gorgeous, with Peak District walks right on your doorstep.

Winnow Stables was very comfortable and we had a fabulous stay. It was wonderful to be able to walk in this beautiful area without having to use the car. The food delivery from Sauced Here (and ale from The Dovedale Brewing Co.) was great and Andrea & John were very friendly and helpful. We would certainly recommend Winnow Stables and hope to return ourselves.

We stayed three years ago and pleased to say the place is still first class, everything you need for a self catering stay. You can take long walks over the back to Ilam or over the hills at the front to Dovedale. The owners give a warm welcome even in these difficult times.

Location
The neighbourhood
Tiny Ilam’s clutch of chocolate-box cottages is a pretty distraction, but for pub grub you’ll need to walk 30 minutes to Alstonefield to find The George or to Wetton for The Royal Oak. Nearby towns include Ashbourne and Bakewell – the latter famous for its cakes and weekly farmers’ market. It’s blissfully quiet here, the only sound being the not-too-early morning braying of the two resident donkeys, who you’re welcome to visit, and there are plenty of walks on the doorstep which display the best bits of the Peak District.
Local points of interest from Andrea Clarke
- Amble up the fields just as the sun is about to set, perhaps take a picnic rug and a bottle of fizz to see the sun set over the hills... look up and see the noisy curlews heading home and spot a scurrying hare whizzing through the meadows
- Fabulous walks and cycling from the doorstep suitable for all abilities. Exert yourself in Wolfscote Dale, admire views from the top of Thorpe Cloud or simply amble beside the river Dove in Milldale.
- Spend a day at Chatsworth pottering around the gardens and looking around the house before a lazy picnic on the lawns beside cascade. Kedleston, Sudbury, Haddon and Hardwick Halls are all within easy reach too.
- Take a morning walk from the doorstep across the fields. Take in the gorgeous views as you hike across Bunster and then descend to the famous Dovedale Stepping Stones. A little more walking over fields until you reach The Old Dog in time for lunch.
- Check out the wildlife, curlews, skylarks, buzzards and kestrels are amongst a few of the regular visitors visible from the barn.If you prefer something slightly less flighty we have pet goats Wilfy and Jimbo who are always happy to receive a cuddle
- Explore the local market towns of Ashbourne, Bakewell and Leek. Wonderful cafes and restaurants to try out.Alton Towers, Matlock Park Farm, Go Ape and Peak Wildlife Park are all close and great days out for all the family.

Introducing
Andrea Clarke
Andrea and John Clarke took on the restoration job of a lifetime when they bought Damgate Farm fourteen years ago, swapping their professional careers in Sheffield for rare-breed sheep and converting dilapidated barns into three beautiful holiday lets. Now that their two daughters have flown the coop for university they’ve moved in a flock of rescued ex-battery hens and two donkeys, along with a host of other animals who call the farm home.
Our second visit to Winnow Stables. Lovely cosy, comfortable accommodation. Very clean and lovely linens on the beds. Situated in one of the prettiest and spectacular parts of the country I would highly recommend staying at Winnow Stables.
