The Experience

On the hem of Emsworth, a handsome boaty town, perched on an inlet on Chichester Harbour, The Ropemaker and its 43 bedrooms shine bright after a smart renovation. A light and airy dining rooms sets the scene for seasonal meals while the comfy bar and lounge with a huge central island invites you to sip a G&T or real ale.

Pops of colour in rich fabrics, wallpaper and artworks divide the downstairs into cosy and informal fire-warmed areas for winter visits. In warmer months, you’ll spill onto the terrace and lawn or duck into a beach hut if there’s a summery downpour. Bedrooms are charming with a nod to the coastal location and Victorian heritage, and smart bathrooms stock fragrant Bramley potions.

Come to walk the South Downs, have a flutter at Goodwood, spot masses of birds on the marshes and amble through the cathedral city of Chichester. Bring the dog.

Reviews

Looks can be deceiving – this rambling, once-faded hotel was snapped up by Heartwood Inns and transformed following huge investment into a vibrant pub with rooms, opening in July 2024. Yes, there are 43 rooms, all cosy, colourful and contemporary, but the interior has been stylishly reinvented, so expect to find a stunning island bar, informal dining areas, and fresh food on seasonal menus.

Local points of interest from The Heartwood Inns Team

  • A short walk from Emsworth Quay and Chichester Harbour, we're well located for Goodwood race-goers, walkers exploring the South Downs, 'twitchers' searching for wintering waders on the marshes, and the attractions of both Portsmouth and Chichester.
  • Amble through Chichester to find the Norman Cathedral and the Pallant House Gallery, or follow the Antiques Trail through Petworth. For history buffs, there are Roman villas at Fishbourne and Bignor plus a magnificent castle at Arundel.
  • Chichester Harbour Water Tours - there are boat trips four times a day during high season. It's a great way to discover one of Britain's wonderful natural harbours, find out how it evolved and to learn all about its wildlife.
  • Fishbourne Roma Palace located near Chichester, Fishbourne Roman Palace was built in the 1st century AD and today its many visitors get the chance to see the largest collection of mosaics in situ anywhere in the UK.
  • Uppark House South Harting near Petersfield, today, it seems hard to believe that this imposing Georgian house was badly damaged by fire in the 1980s.
  • Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, West Dean The museum, set in 50 acres of the South Downs National Park, has a collection of nearly 50 historic buildings rescued from destruction and rebuilt in rolling downland.
