The Experience
A very worthy rewilding project on the Somerleyton estate, for which the owner and all the staff share huge enthusiasm. You stay in the clubhouse or one of the cabins – either a standard or deluxe. All have glass walls to the living room, built specifically to feel part of the wild countryside setting and some have lake views, but they’re cleverly designed not to overlook one another and eating outdoors will be wonderful in warm weather.
Kitchens are compact and adjoin the living rooms but you can eat at the clubhouse – everything comes from the estate or as nearby as possible: shrimp, game, trout, cheese, vegetables, beef, mussels and mushrooms (of which there are many varieties and the estate employ their own forager.) Jump in the lake or the heated pool; play tennis, pétanque or have a guided run. Learn more about the rewilding project in a special classroom.
Lovely walks abound and there are jeep and boat safaris round the whole restoration area.

Location
The neighbourhood
The countryside is wild and uncultivated, the birdlife is immense and walks will be glorious. The estate pub is the Duke's Head at Somerleyton, 10 minutes in the car and there is also a pub serving food at St Olaves, less than two miles. The sea is about a 20-minute drive and the charming market towns of Beccles and Bungay are a similar distance. The beautiful medieval city of Norwich is 40 mins.
Local points of interest from Helena Smith
- A visit to Somerleyton Hall is a must - part of our beautiful estate and only a Stones throw (or walk) from us!
- We at Fritton are lucky enough to have the largest Natural lake in Suffolk within our grounds at over 2 miles long its perfect for a spot of rowing (boats can be hired) or maybe the keen angler among you can fish for one of the many species within the lake.
- Fritton owl sanctuary is free to visit and you can access it via Fritton Plant Centre.
- Barney Arms Windmill - It's one of Norfolk's largest and best marsh mills. The ill was built in 1865 and worked as a drainage mill from 1880.
- Burgh Castel Roman Site - It's the best-preserved Roman monument in East Anglia. The remains of the fort itself are in the guardianship of English Heritage.
- Haven Bridge is an historic lifting bridge that dates back to 1930. A marvellous bridge, it was once the only place to cross and thus heavily congested.

Introducing
Helena Smith
Hugh Crossley, 4th Baron Somerleyton is the owner of the estate and lives in the Hall. He has given over much of his farmland for the rewilding project – this has led to the protection and restoration of carefully managed sustainable wild land that is now home to free-roaming deer, cattle, water buffalo, sheep, ponies and rich bird and plant life. Helena will be your contact for booking your stay.
After several years inspecting Sawday's properties, Fritton Lake has been a surprise and a unique experience. Its very remoteness has already given it a cachet among the cool Norwich set, and what gives the project its heart and its excitement is the sense of being part of an enormous thousand-acre project to return it to the wild. Yet the focus has to be the two-and-a-half-mile long lake.
