The Experience
On Neenton’s doorstep lie 600 miles of byways and bridleways – hiker heaven. (Dogs like it too.) Three miles away are views that stretch from the Cotswolds to Snowdonia, so set off for Brown Clee Hill and blow the cobwebs away. It’s the perfect prelude to dinner.
Stock up with Shropshire grown and reared goodies from The Ludlow Farm Shop or head off for the day to Ironbridge Gorge. With its wooded hillsides and industrial legacy, it’s one of the most dramatic historic sites in England. Then back to your cosy, carpeted hideaway on the upper floor, reached via outside stairs and well away from the hubbub below. There are two bedrooms under the eaves, and open-plan living below, with a galley kitchen tailor-made for foodies.
Downstairs is the beamed bar: a wood-burner for wet and windy days, and food, wines and local ales to bring cheer. Find a table, or take a pint to your pad and make yourselves at home.

Location
The neighbourhood
The hamlet of Neenton lies 12 country miles from Ludlow, loved for its castle, its food shops and its Saturday market. Stock up here, and if you don't fancy cooking, the Pheasant will spoil you on your return. Shropshire's border country is also the land of A E Housman's "Blue Remembered Hills". There are paths from the pub’s dapper door and a 10-minute drive will take you to Brown Clee Hill – a bikers’ and hikers’ paradise.
Local points of interest from John Pickup
- Welcome to beautiful South Shropshire – true Old England with small fields, wandering hedgerows and lanes to get lost in. But there’s fine food, wonderful beers, and enough to see and do for a really busy week …… and then come back again for more!
- The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretches from here to the Welsh Border. Brown Clee Hill, the highest point in Shropshire is just 3 miles away with views to the Welsh mountains, the Peak District, the Malverns and the Cotswolds.
- Ludlow, delightful market town and foodie mecca of the UK with arts, music and food festivals, is just 20 mins away. Pop to Bridgnorth (15 mins) and its Severn Valley Railway, or Much Wenlock, and the priory. Kayak down the Severn and take the train back!
- The Ironbridge Gorge, World Heritage Site and cradle of the Industrial Revolution (30 mins) has a dozen superb museums to fascinate you for days. English Heritage and National Trust properties abound: Wroxeter, Attingham Park, Dudmaston and Boscobel House
- Roam the spectacular walking country with vistas across the Welsh Marches. Footpaths like the Shropshire Way lead you through Corvedale and over Wenlock Edge to the Long Mynd. Or just walk up to Five Springs and drink in the view before dinner.
- The Shropshire Hills has a variety of geological features representing most of the earth’s history - unparalleled for such a small area, View the diverse landscapes: crags, scarps and valleys and different building materials which lend such character.

Introducing
John Pickup
In 2014, without a village hall, school or playground to their name, the doughty villagers rallied. They acquired land behind the pub, got planning permission, sold seven houses, and helped fund the restoration and extension of a previously derelict 18th-century inn. Thanks to managers Mark and Sarah, and director John, both pub and village thrive.
Newly refurbished apartment occupying two floors above a thriving community-owned pub deep in the Shropshire Hills – walk downstairs for quality locally sourced food and excellent breakfasts. Fabulous walking from the front door (Brown Clee Hill) and foodie Ludlow is close by.
