The Experience
Dodge the lazy sheep on the long drive to arrive (eventually!) at a sweep of gravel and lovely old Cardross in a gorgeous setting. Bang on the enormous ancient door and either Archie or Nicola (plus labradors and lively Jack Russells) will usher you in. And what a delight it is; come here for a blast of Scottish history! Traditional big bedrooms have airiness, long views, antiques, wooden shutters, towelling robes and good linen; one bathroom has a cast-iron period bath. The drawing room is vast, the house is filled with warm character, the Orr Ewings can tell you all the history.

The drive to Cardross was quite stunning with the wonderful autumn colours glowing in the sun. Careful to avoid the guinea foul on the drive, you know it is going to be a very relaxing place to stay. It is traditional and calm without any sign of rush, allowing you to enjoy your stay.

Top line: Great house, great hosts, great dinner. Best night of a trip full of good ones. We really can't gush enough about what a lovely time we had at Cardross. We were there for a special birthday night - and the hosts cooked a spectacular dinner, we drank champagne in the library by the fire with the dogs, and had interesting and lively conversation like we were guests of the family. We look forward to returning some day.

Just the loveliest place to stay. Comfortable, beautiful, with gorgeous walks starting at the front door. Our hosts are personable and kind, and the breakfast was delicious. We couldn't have asked for better.
