The Experience

The magnificence of the landscape surely inspired the Victorian artists who named this solid stone cottage their studio. Step straight into a modern, country-cosy, slate-floored kitchen, a great place to cook a romantic meal after a day up Snowdon… then cuddle into the bright two-seater sofa by the wood-burner in the large living room, where rag-washed ochre walls compliment the drape of rich fabrics and modern art.

Then it’s an easy hop up open stairs to a mezzanine bedroom above – the result of the entire building being constructed around a vast boulder. You’re left basics in the cupboards for cooking, Welsh cakes, a Welsh loaf and locally-roasted coffee along with fresh eggs and a tin of soup in case you’ve come empty handed – it’s a generous sort of place.

It’s all about the walking here – up to a picnic bench in a woodland clearing with views along the magnificent Lledr Valley, or to the Neolithic burial chamber behind.

Reviews

Thank you Gwawr & Ian so much for a fabulous stay in your beautiful studio apartment. So comfortable perfect for relaxing, having the open fire as an option was very appealing to me, especially some of the days after hiking in Snowdonia, plus the walks close by, the apartment is fully equipped & had everything I needed in the way of utilities. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, the pillows were just the right amount of support. Thank you again Gwawr & Ian it was the best stay. The breakfast of Greek yoghurt, cheese, milk and eggs so enjoyable and very healthy which I totally enjoyed.

This was our 4th visit to The Studio. We have travelled around the world and this is our favourite place. The Studio is perfectly situated for various activities including walking and experiencing the thrill of the zip wires. Gwawr and Ian are the perfect hosts and have a lovely, cosy place to stay as well as providing everything you should need. Will definitely be back again!

Alison, Andover, Hampshire

An exceptional choice and fabulous location just up from the village of Betsy—coed. The studio is everything one could wish for as it’s well appointed, cosy and comfortable , and very well equipped. The washer was a godsend especially if you’re a walker as clothes get v muddy when it’s wet out of doors. I was with my family for some of the stay and they were accommodated in the house in 2 very lovely bedrooms. They both expressed their eagerness to return another day. My nephew said the breakfast was to “ die for”. It was a throughly wonderful experience and definitely the place to stay.

What beautiful accommodation in a stunning location. Ian & Gwawr are the perfect hosts. We had such a lovely time. This place is highly recommended.

My wife and I spent 7 x nights at The Studio over Christmas 22/23. This was the third time we've returned & we were not disappointed! Gwawr & Ian put in a huge amount of effort in to maintaining very high standards & also provide a wonderful welcome, with essentials laid on for guests arriving at this magical location. We felt very spoilt and were delighted with the accommodation & facilities (including a kitchen with everything you could need). The log burning fire is the absolute pinnacle, with a fire already set and logs provided. We LOVE this place and will keep coming back. 5 STARS

Tim, Horsham

Lovely place to stay, away from the bustle of Betwys. Always feel very welcome at Pengwern. Delightful and comfortable apartment, very well equipped.

Graham, Winchester

We always rely on Sawdays and The Studio certainly didn't disappoint. It was spotless with excellent facilities and a thoughtful welcome pack awaiting our arrival. Gwawr has equipped the Studio very well, and with sufficient space in drawers and cupboards, especially in the kitchen, for the use of guests. We were very comfortable and warm during our week's stay - Gwawr and Ian are a charming couple who made us feel most welcome. The location is perfect for exploring scenic Snowdonia and the surrounding towns and villages.

Pauline, Hereford

Stayed here for a 3 night break. Cottage lacked nothing, it was clean, well equipped, warm. I booked with the owner, Gwawr, who went out of her way to make the cottage available. A lovely welcome pack on arrival. Village has everything you need too, and it's beautiful.

Sally, Driffield

The studio was well presented, ideal for a couple. It had everything we needed and fully equipped with all necessary items, the position of the studio was well located just outside the town. We certainly would return and recommend the studio a lovely little gem.

Lorraine, Chelmsford

We highly recommend the Studio. It is so well equipped. spottlesly clean and in such a beautiful location. The owners, Gwawr and Ian, are so friendly and welcoming. This was our third visit and we hope to return again in the future.

Sandra, Sheffield

A lovely, snug, warm and welcoming cottage - The Studio is perfect for a relaxing week in beautiful Snowdonia. Betws y Coed is close by and there a lovely walks within 2mins of the cottage. All the amenities were well maintained - The Studio was spotless, clean and lacking for nothing. Gwar & Ian were close by and very helpful. We have stayed at a lot of places over the years and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Studio.

Peter, Lancaster

We had an amazing stay. The studio itself was perfect for relaxing after a day out in the mountains. Loved the log burner and well equipped kitchen with some lovely produce included :). Diolch yn fawr Gwawr, wnaethon ni mwynhau gymaint. Rwy'n siwr bydden ni'n aros yma eto os yw'n bossib!

Iwan, Bristol

This beautifully presented cottage provides everything you need for visiting this stunning part of North Wales. The location is quiet and ideal for a walk down to the Fairy Glen or into Betws. The hosts were friendly and welcoming without being in any way intrusive and the initial supply of local produce was generous and tasty. The layout of the studio is unusual and works well and it is spotless and feels very safe.

Bernie, Devizes

A throughly warm Welsh welcome in the heart of Snowdonia. A great place to return to after a hard walk in the mountains with everything you need provided. Many thanks Gwawr.

The Studio Pengwern is a delightful cottage in a tranquil but central part of north Wales. The cottage is well-appointed, and carefully and tastefully furnished. It is both comfortable and clean with modern appliances, but it cosy and full of charm. The welcome pack was greatly appreciated. Ian and Gwawr were friendly and hospitable while keeping a respectful distance. Covid provisions were carefully enforced. We enjoyed a restorative seven days at Pengwern, which represents a wonderful retreat. Thank you: a great find!

Lesley

We spent a most enjoyable week at The Studio and can't recommend it highly enough. Despite the covid19 restrictions, Gwawr made us feel most welcome and nothing was too much trouble - the welcome pack was much appreciated, especially the cakes! The studio is cosy and extremely well-equipped and we wanted for nothing. It is a good base for exploring the area and we were able to do a number of walks in the National Park. Thank you Gwawr for making our introduction to North Wales so pleasant.

Introducing

Gwawr & Ian Mowatt

Welsh is Gwawr's first language so she'll happily tell you how to pronounce her name! Both she (who loves nature and paints as a hobby) and Ian (an experienced mountain walker) are from the area. They love their guests to enjoy a taste of the real Welsh experience. They know climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is a captivating draw but they also know there is much, much more to enjoy in this beautiful countryside.
