The Experience
The house dates from 1780, with a roof terrace added in the 1950s and the architecture is Pre-Raphaelite in style with heavy wood carvings and large windows. The hallway gives onto a beautiful dining room and a well-proportioned sitting room with a fireplace, sofa, plump armchairs, lots of books and a piano. Huge windows reveal views over the lawns to mature trees – a peaceful spot.
One bedroom, Sage, is at garden level; Madder and Jacinthe are on the second floor and have a little seating area between them with a library where you can make a brew. All three are a good size (Sage is the biggest) and have pretty colour palettes and garden views. Breakfast is served in the dining room or on the back terrace: croissants, pains au chocolat, homemade jams, local honey, yogurt and fresh fruit. Those staying more than one night can order dinner, two or three courses with cheese.
Wander the forest for a surprise or two, rest in the sun.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're on the edge of Merdrignac, a little town, but with good independent shops and a market on Wednesdays. You can get a decent plat du jour at Le Central Bar then join the Voie Verte for wonderful walks, runs or cycles through pretty countryside. A lake campsite nearby offers sailing and archery in summer and a studio cinema with French and English films. Dinan is 48km, Saint-Malo 80km.
Local points of interest from Anoushka Lewis
- Cycle the Voie Verte from Merdrignac to Laurenan and visit the château on its open days.
- Explore the historic streets of Dinan, before walking down the hill to have lunch at the river port.
- Visit the atmospheric walled town of Saint Malo for shopping and some moules à la creme and a local cider by the beach.
- Wander the magnificent Saturday morning market in Rennes and have a coffee/pick me up at the Mama restaurant (great views out on the market).
- Sample some brilliant Galettes at my favourite spot: Crêperie des Forges.
- Pack a picnic and go for a walk and find a secluded spot for a wild swim on Lac de Guerlédan. Or go for a swim in the sea at Erquy, and then walk the coastal pathways.

Introducing
Anoushka Lewis
Anoushka grew up in rural Suffolk then moved to London to work in the theatre as a set builder, scenic artist and stage manager. She yearned for more green space and bought this house, then dilapidated, in 2021. She has done a brilliant job of rescuing it, pouring all her passion and inspiration into it. She's always loved looking after people and cooking, so you'll be very spoilt.
It would be great fun to stay here, to explore this mysterious and charming house, beautifully decorated by bubbly Anoushka fresh from a career in London's theatre scene. Dinners sound delicious!
