The Experience
Spread out over a large living room with lots of sofas and chairs. With the wood-burner flickering on chilly nights, wooden floors gleaming and colourful rugs and walls this will be a very happy place to be. Upstairs is the piano room, a great bright space with more seating, books and games. Mostly you’ll be outdoors, eating at a long table in the gravelled courtyard. Play boules, ping pong, light up the lovely old wood-fired bread/pizza oven; cool off in the saltwater pool with views of fields from the sun loungers.
Bedrooms are spread out upstairs, all different, all charming and colourful with some antique wallpapers remaining, paints handmade by owner Lorna, and vintage or antique furniture. The big kitchen is a pleasure to work in with a range cooker, lots of space and doors to the back courtyard for outdoor meals.
You’re on the edge of a pretty village – there’s no bakery but Lorna and Andrew are happy to deliver your morning bread and croissants to you if you’d like.

What an absolutely stunning home La Maison Lemoine is! Wow! Every room was joyful and such a beautiful area to explore. We didn’t really need to move from the house, fantastic pool and pool games, beautiful scenery, table tennis & boules matches in the garden and cycles if we’d needed them. Every evening we cooked and ate outdoors as a family, making full use of the BBQ and large stove in the stunning kitchen. Lorna (the owner) was exceptionally accommodating. Support every step of the way. One hundred percent above & beyond. The only flaw in the trip, we all wished we had stayed longer.

A lovely french house that has been lovingly restored by the owners. We were warmly welcomed by Lorna and Andrew on arrival and shown about. We were immediately impressed. Andrew delivered bread and pastries to us each morning on request and as hosts could not have been more helpful. The house had everything we needed and the rooms were all a great size and the grounds and heated pool were amazing. We had an amazing time and had plenty of space for two families, could have even had a third easily. There was an old bread oven to cook wood fired pizza and we took advantage of recommendations.

Warm and friendly Lorna and Andrew have renovated La Maison Lemoine with great care and passion. Lorna made her own wall paints with lime and pigments, and each room tells you a different story. It would be the perfect place for a big gathering of friends or family: cook together in the huge kitchen, chill in the 'piano room', relax by the pool overlooking fields...and maybe some nosy cows!

This is a special place, created with care, attention to detail, and sensibility. The ambience of la Maison Lemoine is like nowhere we've ever stayed. It's one of the most relaxing places we've stayed too, with a quiet one might associate with several centuries previously (there is the odd passing car, but few). The decoration is exceptional, the walls lime-washed with rare and authentic pigments to create a set of genuinely beautiful and unique spaces. Everything you need is here, including an ancient wood-fired bread oven in which we made the best pizzas we've ever had.

This house exudes charm and style and has been lovingly brought back to life with flair and an eclectic mix of French furnishings and a clever colour palette which echoes the original paintwork of this elegant farmhouse. Our room had a balcony to the front and an incredible view over open fields to the side and a lovely new ensuite shower room. We really appreciated the attention to detail and the way that the character of the house has been preserved. We appreciated the huge and well-equipped kitchen and dining room and enjoyed an evening making pizza in the outhouse pizza oven.

We stayed in mid April and it was a truly magical time, the weather was glorious and the lush green hills behind the house a carpet of wild flowers as far as the eye could see ! The house absolutely beautiful, large airy rooms and kept nice and cool on the hottest days, the April evening chill was kept at bay by the large wood burning stove in the lounge and open fire place in the enormous kitchen, super cosy and comfy. Can't wait to return I don't think I've ever slept so well and so many fab memories of our stay, highly recommended, children and dogs are welcome and the hosts delightful people!

Location
The neighbourhood
The canal side village of Marigny-le-Cahouët is surrounded by beautiful green hills and fields of grazing Charolais cows. There are stunning medieval towns to visit like Semur-en-Auxois (11 kms) which has a Sunday market. Flavigny-sur-Ozerain (10 kms) is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Walk, cycle along the canal, visit castles, taste amazing wine, swim in Lac de Pont.
Local points of interest from Andrew & Lorna Kirkwood
- Reconnect with nature. Fling open your windows to stunning birdsong. Converse with Charolais cattle whilst lounging by the pool Hide away with a book in the lavoir garden. If you're lucky you'll see deer or wild boar on the hills beyond the house at dusk.
- Lots of opportunity for outdoor pursuits. The house is just 2 minutes walk from the Canal de Bourgogne and it's towpath perfect for cycling, walking or running. Lakes are on the doorstep for wild swimming and nautical fun - try Lac de Pont or the Morvan.
- Explore the little discovered region of Auxois, it's medieval villages and towns. Flavigny sur Ozerain perched on a hill boasts stunning views, bars and restaurants and a sweet factory. Semur en Auxois is a must with its cobbled streets and Sunday market
- Have a go at making woodfired pizzas in the original bread oven - Lorna and Andrew can give you tips as learnt from Gill Meller during his stay. Lay out a banquet on the large outdoor table, drink rosé from Domaine Flavigny Alesia or BBQ a côte de boeuf .
- Feast on local produce - goats cheese from down the road, beef from the fields around. Shop at Dijon market (home of mustard and cassis) Head to Beaune for some wine tasting. Dine out at our favourite, La Fontaignotte or the famous Loiseau in Saulieu.
- Discover the secrets of this wonderful house. Ask us about the US soldiers, the hidden love letters or the the magic of the Bibliotheque. Kids will love exploring the outbuildings and making dens. Marigny has a charming 12 century chateau 10 mins walk away

Introducing
Andrew & Lorna Kirkwood
Andrew, who has a sister living in the area, and Lorna moved to France in 2007 with their two children just as an experiment for 6 months. They have yet to leave! They know the area well and are passionate about promoting it. They live nearby and can happily organise bike hire, guided cycle tours, demonstrations on handmaking paints, wine and cheese tastings or visits to Dijon and Beaune. They'll cook your first dinner if you ask.
A charming old house which has been carefully restored. In a delightful canal-side setting, the house is well equipped with plenty of things for children to do including an excellent pool. We were 3 families with 4 children who all had a wonderful holiday. I cannot recommend Maison Lemoine highly enough.
