The Experience
You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time in this beautiful Burgundian village: cobbled streets and mellow rose-clad stone buildings are wrapped in peaceful countryside. And you get to stay in a gorgeous medieval house, built above ancient arches and reached by a red wooden door. Inside it’s homely and inviting, an easy place to be with its own slice of garden.
Embrace village life. Visit the bakery for your morning baguette and croissants, the butcher for some local cuts to cook later, picnic on the banks of the river Serein – you can swim here too. Hop in the car to other swimming spots, châteaux, the Cistercian Fontenay Abbey, hilltop towns and villages. You can also walk or cycle from the door.
Snuggle up under wonky old beams in the glorious library, pop your fresh cheese on the raclette, play games or sit out in the pretty courtyard glass in hand. Retire to comfy bedrooms, the master has an ensuite, both have garden views.

The house, the village, the region - everything was a step back in time. The house has been so sympathetically restored, yet has incorporated modern touches. A real labour of love and a desire to extend the life of such an historic gem. Once here you will never want to leave.

A wonderful house: beautifully furnished with a large eclectic library, quiet but in the centre of the town. We watched the sun rise from our bed. The owners were so helpful when we had to change our dates; they provided masses of information on the town and surrounding sites. We shall stay again.

This is a truly wonderful place to stay in a magical, peaceful part of France. Lee and Mathilde have restored their medieval house with great taste and character, but it also well equipped and comfortable . We thoroughly enjoyed the small market, two mini-supermarkets and independent butcher. The village has several restaurants (one exceptionally high quality) but it was also a pleasure to cook in the well-appointed 15th-century kitchen and have croissants in the courtyard garden. There are gorgeous walks from the house and numerous great places to visit nearby. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Le Clos Couvert is one of the village's beautiful medieval houses, and I felt privileged to step inside. Lee and Mathilde have created a home full of character, history, light (and books!) and are now sharing it with lucky guests. Pick one of the comfy chairs of the library or sit on your private terrace for a G&T in the evening sunlight, or head to one of the local bistro for a glass of Chablis!

Location
The neighbourhood
There are five restaurants in the village, choose from pizza, dishes from the local region or something a bit more fancy. Visit Ancy's (22km) fine Renaissance castle or wander the magnificent ruins of chateau de Rochefort (25km). There's a scattering of local hilltop villages and towns all around - Montréal and Thizy both 20km. Walk in the Vallée du Serein or cycle along the Canal du Nivernais.

- A ruined castle, crumbling towers, cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, charming riverside walks and restaurants - that's Noyers, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France. And Le Clos Couvert is right in the heart of it.
- Medieval stuff aside, 4 restaurants, 2 épiceries, a bistro, a butcher, and a newsagent are literally just a few steps from the front door As are the local crafts shops (leather, pottery, wood ...), galeries and antique shops ... and a museum.
- The region is crawling with castles (Ancy le Franc, Tanlay, Bussy-Rabutin, Maulnes ...) and abbeys, notably Fontenay (UNESCO). Not to mention Vezelay (UNESCO yet again), and a plethora of fortified hilltop towns (Avallon, Montréal, Semur-en-Auxois ...)
- Fed up with fortifications? Try the Morvan, 35 minutes away, an astonishing wooded wilderness with river valleys and several large lakes where you can go swimming and boating, followed by dinner in a lakeside restaurant. An area ideal for walkers.
- Wine? Noyers has its own (ask at the butchers). Chablis is 20 minutes away. St Bris (delicious white) is even closer. Local reds come from Irancy (beautiful village in the hills) and Coulanges. For big reds you can head down south to Beaune
- Young children? Noyers has a play area and paddling in the village river. Nearby there are grottoes (Arcy, Le Champ Retard) and a charming little train (Massangis). And you'll all enjoy Guedelon, where they are building a huge stone castle by hand.

Introducing
Lee Humphreys & Mathilde Delamotte
English Lee and French Mathilde live in Paris, they are retired but he used to work in AI and she as a television researcher. They bought the 15th-century house in 2012 and spent eight years renovating it; Lee has a passion for architecture and restoration and you can tell how carefully the project was undertaken. They visit whenever they can so it really feels like a home from home for guests - they'll either greet you on arrival if they're down for the day, or a local friend will.
The house in Noyers is fantastic and as expected. Right in the heart of a French medieval village. Beautiful area of France with lots to do in the village and surrounding area superbly looking after by owners and their friend. A great slice of village life. In 10 days we felt we knew half the residents. You need a car to make the most of it but well worth the trip. Couldn’t recommend highly enough.
