The Experience

Walk in to an open-plan living room and kitchen, a sociable setup with lovely views over the garden. Find a big stone fireplace with a wood-burner, comfy seating and plenty of board games and books. Mostly you’ll be in the lovely pool room relaxing on a lounger or pitting yourself against the ‘resist mode’ of the large pool followed by a sauna.

The kitchen is spacious and modern with a well-stocked batterie de cuisine: plenty of pots and pans, eye-level oven, big fridge and freezer, all the basics for cooking and a few treats including local cider and wine. On warm days you can eat poolside at a wicker table with dining chairs, or in the garden. A half-hour walk along beautiful sunken lanes will take you to the nearest town, Hambye, for boulangerie, butcher, two bars and a supermarket.

Return to peaceful bedrooms, two on the first floor and one in the eaves, all light and bright with views over the garden or a quiet country lane.

Reviews

I love how old meets new in this cottage, and the pool and sauna are a real treat. There's so much to discover locally too. The enchanting nearby ruined abbey is a must.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're down a narrow country lane with high hedgerows and pastures full of mooing cows. Hire bikes and reach Hambye in 10 minutes. A good restaurant, Auberge de l'Abbaye, is 5km with a riverside setting and ruined medieval abbey. The coast is a 25-minute drive and there are good markets at Gavray, 12 minutes. Coutances with antiques warehouse, gardens and jazz festival in May is a 20-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Darren Clayton

  • Open country setting close to historic village and Abbey. The village boasts a large “Artisan” boulangerie. Hambye is around a mile away and accessible on foot or on bicycle through the back lanes. The local supermarket has a card operated petrol station.
  • A heated indoor pool (with swimjet and power cover) and large sauna are accessible directly from the house. Large bifold doors open out onto the large south facing patio and garden. In keeping with the house the pool room has underfloor heating.
  • The house is designed with privacy in mind. There is no prospect of the local postman popping his head around the corner as there is no access from the small country lane save through the front door.
  • Around 30 minutes to the many local beaches (both sandy and otherwise) and pretty towns. A little longer to Mont St Michel (a must). Local markets are on different days. Plenty of good restaurants. The village itself boasts a fine dining restaurant.
  • Professional tours of D-Day beaches can be arranged if booked in advance. There is even a local zoo nearby. Many guests find themselves simply relaxing with local cheese and cider or perhaps making use of the new outdoor table tennis table or Weber BBQ.
  • Excellent parking with E/V charging point free to guests. The owners Louise and Darren are next door only rarely but the team, and especially the welcoming team, are on hand to look after any needs.
