The Experience

Your laid-back and generous hosts delight in looking after guests in their grand yet homely château. They’ve poured love and dedication into faithfully restoring it in true Belle Epoque style, matching heritage colours, materials and antique furniture to bring out its rich layers of history. Each opulent room and suite is named after a notable visitor.

Breakfast is a delicious spread, served whenever you fancy, in the lavish dining room under glittering chandeliers. Everywhere you look, there are objets d’art and Danish ceramics, paintings and portraits, a grand piano to tinkle, and your hosts can tell you the story behind it all. Sit and read a book, play cards and chat, watch birds and wildlife in the vast park, walk across manicured lawns and deep into the forest.

It’s an easy cycle into the spa town of Bagnoles for restaurants, cafés and local markets, and there are two Michelin-starred restaurants within 10 miles.

Reviews

Such a fabulous experience! Soren and Klaus made our two nights at the Chateau very comfortable with their friendly relaxed attitude and meticulous professionalism. The house is superb, with beautiful antiques and interesting objects everywhere you look. I can’t rate the house highly enough.

Jackie, London

I know Klaus and Soren would make me feel very at home in their unique château. I would especially enjoy the opportunity to look at the night sky with their telescope.

Location

The neighbourhood

Borrow bikes (there are six) and zip into lakeside Bagnoles, an elegant 19th-century spa town filled with interesting properties, for a thermal bath and a relaxing treatment - your hosts can book ahead. You're in the heart of the Normandie-Maine Regional Natural Park with the Forest of Andaines for long hikes where you may spot shy deer and wild boar.

Local points of interest from Soren Rasmussen & Klaus Bentin

  • LE MONT-SAINT-MICHEL an impressive monastery that seems to float between the sea and the sky. Please be aware that it is one off France's largest tourist attraction, and high-season visitation can be substantial.
  • D-DAY beaches carries the legacy of D-Day, with the entire region rich in memorials and war museums. It was here that the Allied forces landed during World War II in the invasion known as D-Day to give us our freedom.
  • BAYEUX TAPESTRY is a unique attraction in the town of Bayeux, telling the story of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and William the Conqueror's conquest of England. The 70-meter-long embroidered tapestry is a vivid narrative and a rare cultural treasure.
  • GOLF OF BAGNOLES DE L'ORNE Across from Chateau du Gue aux Biches you'll find the Golf of Bagnoles de l'Orne. If golf interests you, you can either rent equipment on-site or bring your own clubs.
  • Bagnoles-de-l'Orne just 1,5 km from the chateau is a charming town located in Normandy, renowned for its thermal baths and wellness facilities. The town has a long history as a popular spa destination and is an idyllic place for visitors to relax.
  • French Cuisine. Go to the markets and the local farms so you can cook dinner at the chateau with a local chef. The chef comes to you and agrees what you want to eat, you shop together and prepare dinner together and enjoy it in the dining room.

Introducing

Soren Rasmussen & Klaus Bentin

Klaus and Soren left Denmark in search of a château, and in 2017 they found this lovely old place in a sorry state of disrepair and set about bringing it back to life before opening to guests in 2021. Your multi-lingual hosts speak English, German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and French.
