The Experience
Staying here, in the grounds of your kind host’s stately 18th-century château is wonderfully relaxing. There’s a serene, uncluttered feel to Stéphanie’s interior design and you look out from light bedrooms on the estate stables and grounds; the wooded hills beyond entice you to lace up your walking boots. At breakfast there’s a fine spread of homemade jams, local cakes, cheeses – like the soft Rollot – and charcuterie… take some home too from the Sunday market in nearby Poix de Picardie.Amiens, with its fine Notre Dame gothic Cathedral, is also a foodie city (almond macaroons a speciality) with excellent restaurants like Brasserie Jules and Chez Rosa. Go in December for the largest Christmas market in northern France. Follow the WW1 Circuit of Remembrance and visit the wildlife reserve of the beautiful Somme Bay, complete with seal colony.

Location
The neighbourhood
Aumont is a quiet little village in the Picardy countryside – 120k from Paris – with good walking, cycling and riding in the surrounding hills, like the Montagne de Montenoy. Half an hour’s drive from the UNESCO gothic Cathedral of Amiens (its summer and Christmas light show is one of the best); under an hour from the Somme Bay and war memorial sites. The shop in Airaines and the Villa des Houx restaurant in Aumale are 10 minutes’ drive away.
Introducing
Stephanie Danzel d’Aumont
Stéphanie Danzel d’Aumont lives in her family’s château next door and is an enthusiastic host, keen that visitors enjoy her classy conversion of the estate’s 18th-century, brick and stone grain store. A student at the Beaux Arts in Paris, Stephanie trained as an interior designer and her clean-lined, elegant style sits comfortably in this beautifully restored rustic building. Bedside tables made from original stones are a pleasing touch, among many.
A lovely, quiet, friendly and very comfortable place to stay. Wonderful breakfast! Highly recommended.
