The Experience
On the site of a 2000-year-old Roman villa, you will sense the city’s powerful layers of history. In the lovely terraced gardens, artefacts, stone walls and mosaic floors peep out of the pavement; in the house, two ancient Egyptian columns with Roman capitals grace the salon. The ‘modern’ house, much transformed over its six centuries, was a cardinal’s hunting lodge in the 1780s and is now a much-loved family house full of beautiful memories with space for up to 12 or 14.
Spread out in two huge living rooms with fireplaces, chandeliers, giant mirrors, tapestries, period portraits – and a big well-fitted kitchen with wooden tables and hand painted tiles. Breakfast (and other meals) can be arranged with notice: a buffet of fresh croissants, pecorino cheese, ricotta, jams, yogurt and cereals.
Each bedroom is different, some vast and grand, all comfortable, but not all en suite. Take all the rooms or fewer for a reduced rate – off season only.

Out of a movie! Villa Cardinali tucked away in the Roman hills, was magical. We visited with our married children, and our 6 grandchildren. A family of 12. The villa accommodated us very well with its beautifully appointed spacious old-world rooms. There is a pool, a real plus especially for the children! If you are looking for a retreat, a place of peace and serenity to get away from the busy streets of Rome, this is it. The owner Marina and her staff Stefania were very welcoming, kind and accommodating. Both truly went the extra mile to ensure we had a wonderful and most memorable stay.

It was an absolutely perfect long getaway weekend at Marina's house. We were a dozen of friends celebrating a 40th birthday. The villa is absolutely incredible: unique, full of character, comfortable with plenty of spaces to roam around and come together when we want. Marina was so attentive to our (many!) needs, which made for a perfect stay. The food was delicious, pizza night was super fun and the fact that the villa is quite near Rome made it also easy to go out to the city one night. Oh and the pool was perfect for our farniente time during the day. I'm highly recommending this place.

Our stay can only be described as incredible! The host was accommodating for all of our needs. She arranged transportation and tours. All 10 of our family voted this the best stay on our 17 day trip! On our first night we had the best pizza of our lives on the premises! We couldn't have been happier! I requested an Italian dinner for my husband's 77th. Marina outdid herself! From the first course to the last it was incredible. The grounds are beautiful, and it was very relaxing! If we ever travel to Rome again, we would only stay at this FANTASTIC location! If I could give it 10 stars I would.

We stayed here for one week on a family vacation. We are a fairly demanding family when we travel and the property owner and staff tended to all of our needs and went out of their way to ensure that our stay was as enjoyable as it could be starting from home made pizza night to getting us reservations at some of Rome’s most coveted restaurants. We absolutely recommend this beautiful villa for anyone looking to stay in Rome.

We had a wonderful 5 days staying .We were a family of 8 (my wife and I, our adult, children, their partners and friends). It was the perfect location for us on a hill abut 20-25 mins from the centre of Rome by car. The Villa has old world Rome charm it contains an exotic mix of elements from the splendour of Italian glass chandeliers to original ancient Roman columns and other ! Our host Marina also took care of every detail before our arrival and could not have been more helpful. Marina also arranged for Stefania, the housekeeper to come in every morning to prepare breakfast and make up the bedrooms. We had a memorable time at Villa Calli and will return in the years to come.

My family of 16 people rented Villa il Cardinale from December 16-26. My (now) wife and I decided to get married in Rome and needed to find a place that could accommodate our families. Let me just say that, without a doubt, staying at this Villa was one of the best decisions of our lives. The Villa's owner is responsive and flexible. She was ever-patient as she dealt with the evolving needs of my family, including my 85 year old grandmother who had never traveled abroad, and the "no-fail" requirements associated with wedding events. I spent about two years living in Rome and have visited this magical city many times. This trip was by far my best experience--all made possible by our stay at the Villa. There is no way our family would have had this great experience if we rented hotel rooms. Our stay at the Villa was amazing.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're right on the outskirts of the city in a residential area on the hillside just off the motorway. Walk seven minutes to Ristorante Nashville where in a rustic setting you can eat excellent pizza from a wood-burning oven along with good pasta and meat dishes. Transfers to the centre take 20 mins or transfer and train 40.
Local points of interest from Marina Wallace
- Very close to the centre of Rome. Also very close to a local supermarket, and 5 minutes walk from a restaurant that makes the best pizza in town!
