The Experience
Don’t tell! This is one of Palermo’s sweetest secrets. Down one of the few quiet streets of this vibrant city, Le Terrazze is hard to find (harder still to book into: advance bookings only). But as you climb its five plant-filled terraces, each level revealing yet more fine rooftop views, you know it’s been worth it. Set in a 16th-century palazzo, this calm and gracious apartment opens up into lofty sunlit rooms bedecked in antiques, ceramics and paintings, all of which tell of a wealthy family history. During the renovation, Sicilian-born Giovanni and Magda made two remarkable discoveries: a stunning painted wooden ceiling in the sitting room, and fragments of frescoes in the grand, traditional bedrooms. Elegance is de rigeur here, even when sitting down to breakfast. Whether on the shaded terrace or in the dining room, lace tablecloths, heirloom silver and fine china add distinction to pastries, fruits and jams. What better way to begin a day of cultural exploration? Then end it with a gentle passeggiata towards dinner in one of the many local restaurants.

Le Terrazze is a very special place, I would go again to Palermo just to stay here. Giovanni and Magda Rizzo have created a haven, a hidden gem in bustling Palermo. The building is elegant and apartment on the 5th floor, there is a lift. We were given the suite with the 4 poster bed and bathroom with Moorish tiles, and enjoyed impeccable furnishings and decor. The star attraction has got to be the terraces, where we were served a sumptuous breakfast in regal style. We gave up going elsewhere before checking out so we could read for an hour on one of the many terraces.

A fantastic B&B in a central location. The apartment is elegant and spotless and the terraces are stunning. Breakfast is beautifully presented and Giovanni and Magda could not be more helpful. Highly recommended.

Local points of interest from Giovanni & Magda Rizzo
- Last July, UNESCO added Norman-Arab sites to their World Heritage list (7 in Palermo, 1 in Monerale and 1 in Cefalù), a collection of monuments built during the Norman rule (d’Hauteville dynasty), with Arabic influences left over from their rule.
- Check out Il Capo market (300m) for a taste of Palermo, located in the historical district. The market (established during the Arab period) is one of the city’s four outdoor markets and offers an array of goods. A feast for both the eyes and the stomach!
- The market goods are so plentiful, vibrant, tempting and rewarding, it’s easy to overlook some of the architecture in its crumbling splendour. Don’t miss visiting the Church “Immacolata Concezione al Capo”, a masterpiece of baroque architecture.
- Palermo’s Ballarò market (300m) awakens all the senses. Hearing is incited by the ‘abbanniate’, (yelling) of the sellers. Taste and sight feast on the stands crowded with fresh fish, meat, vegetables, and traditional foods like flour and chickpea fritters.
- Sculptor Giacomo Serpotta was born in Palermo in 1652. Though he never left Sicily, he achieved a great deal of fame for his incredible Rococo stucco pieces. The Oratory of Santa Cita, which he worked on for nearly half his life, is his masterpiece.
- Next to the church of San Francesco d’Assisi is the equally impressive Oratorio di San Lorenzo, built in 1569 with a snow white interior of stucco by the great artist.

The views from B&B Le Terrazze's many charming leafy terraces are spectacular - over the cathedral and the city's rooftops. The location is fabulous - a few steps from the cathedral, yet blissfully quiet. We could easily walk to all the city's attractions. Giovanni and the staff are delightful and very helpful. A scrumptious generous breakfast is served in the antique-filled dining room or on the terrace. It's a great base from which to explore Palermo and excellent value.
