The Experience

You’re in the heart of Ortigia’s bustling fish and vegetable market but double glazing keeps things quieter (and air-conditioning cooler.) Your hosts live in Rome but Pierpaolo the manager is on hand if you need anything.

Find a welcome pack that includes traditional almond biscuits, fresh fruit and kitchen basics, and there’s a wine cellar next to the kitchen with Sicilian wines – pour a glass and watch the comings and goings of the market from the balcony. You can pop downstairs for the freshest fish, spices and produce and rustle up simple dinners, or find plenty of street food stalls and restaurants on your doorstep.

Walk to museums and churches – and the ancient Temple of Apollo. Take a cooking class or an archaeological tour, join the locals and swim off the cliffs in summer. Make a day of it by the sea with a picnic.

Reviews

Minimalistic and comfortably contemporary, Casa Sabir has been restored retaining the original charme and spaces. The best feature is definitely the location, above the daily fish and vegetable market. There is plenty to do in the area which makes a car non essential. A great initiation to one of the most charming cities of Sicily.

Location

The neighbourhood

The apartment is in the centre of Ortigia, the small island which forms the historical centre of Syracuse. For street food, try Fratelli Burgio or Siculish, for cheese stop by Caseificio Borderi, for restaurants try Oz e Cappucchio or Kantunera Bistro. Syracuse’s main attraction, Parco Archeologico della Neapolis, is a ten-minute drive, the Necropolis of Pantalica and Vendicari Nature Reserve are an hour away.

Local points of interest from Luca Giannini

  • By the house is the famous historic market of Ortigia, a vibrant, authentic place where to buy fresh fish and genuine local food for your meals. The "market" area is also full of great restaurants, cafes and street food shops where to taste sicilian food
  • In 2 min walk you will be at the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, the most ancient of the greek city
  • Ortigia island is ideal to be discovered on foot: the main piazza Duomo, with its charming stone architecture, is 10 min away and is the ideal place to sit for a coffee or an aperitif in front of the magnificent cathedral
  • Visit the ancient jewish baths in Ortigia witnessing the ancient history of this city which was crossroad of cultures
  • Walk along the charming promenade breathing the scent of the sea and loose yourself in the intricate net of alleys and squares of this old-town founded by Greek colonies about 1,800 years ago
  • Do not miss the archeological area with the gorgeous greek theatre where every year between May and June the famous greek plays are organized at sunset in a fascinating atmosphere
