The Experience
A botanical sanctuary true to its Benedictine past – the walled garden at this restored monastery will refresh your soul. Start your day here, among scented herbs and cool marble sculptures, with fresh coffee and homemade crostata under the shade of the vines.
Honey toned bedrooms have palatial proportions and elegant bathrooms, two with their own sauna and Turkish Hamman. A rare rainy day will be spent blissfully here, with a book by the well-stocked mini bar. Take a seat on the wide pillared portico for views of vine covered hills.
Outdoorsy types will be heading for those hills, The Apuan Alps. Borrow bikes and pedal to the buzzing Italian Riviera. Pisa and Florence are a short drive. Stroll into town for dinner at the local trattoria – there are plenty to choose from and do make time to simply sit and soak up the calm emanating from those ancient garden walls.

Upon entering into La Badia Giulia I felt cocooned by a sense of deep peace and tranquillity. It is palpable in the buildings, the art, the garden and the furniture. Everything about this amazing place says relax. I loved it. The thought, detail and expense that sits behind this magical place all reveals itself and a warm sense of calm descends - a 21st century retreat with ancient foundations.

Location
The neighbourhood
On the outskirts of town with views to the Apuan Alps, bring your hiking boots! It’s a ten-minute stroll for dinner at Trattoria da Marco. Borrow bikes and head to the fabulous beach at Lido de Camaiore, or head into the hills on foot. Visit Pietrasanta, world famous for its contemporary sculpture. Pisa and Florence are both within an hour. The train station is ten minutes’ drive.
Local points of interest from Giuliana D'Angiolo
- Camaiore itself, is the historic hill town founded in 190 BC by the Romans who left Lucca to establish outlying fortifications below Mt. Prana.
- The Badia of San Pietro was the first church in Camaiore, built in 761 along the Roman road, Via Francigena. Done in what came to be known as Romanesque Lucchese style. Badia Giulia is located in the building which hosted the close Benedictine Monastery.
- There are trails for hiking and mountain biking up in the Apuan Alps: Mt. Prana, Mt. Matanna and Mt. Gabberi are just above Camaiore and you'll pass hamlets and castles along the way that are part of its territory.
- Climbing and natural pools in Candalla (3km); Casoli with its “sgraffito” (10 km); Monteggiori with its medieval fortified structure (6 km) and the Via Francigena that crosses the villages of Montemagno and Orbicciano. And fine Versilia beaches at 8 km.
- You can visit the art city of Lucca, a gorgeous place of gardens, medieval and Renaissance buildings, still enclosed inside its old walls. In fact, there is a wonderful walk on top of the walls that you should enjoy. In the mountains discover Garfagnana.
- Torre del Lago is another worthy attraction, a tranquil pretty spot that was favored by the composer Puccini, who lived and worked here. Viareggio and the Carnival (in February) wait for you at 10 km. Enchanting Cinque Terre at 78 km and superb Florence.

Introducing
Giuliana D'Angiolo
When Giuliana and her husband acquired the former Abbey, it was in a state. Working with a local architect and within strict guidelines they embarked on a faithful restoration. The couple both worked in the local marble industry, and wanted to stay true to the building’s origins in both material and atmosphere, as well as indulging their passion for contemporary art. The result is a masterpiece.
What a beautiful part of the world with lovely lovely hosts! Giulia and Ro were extremely accommodating, warm and friendly. The B&B is set in the most beautiful converted monastery that manages to maintain all its historical charm with an exquisite modern upgrade. They were so happy to help us with food and travel recommendations providing local tips that made our travelling around Tuscany 10x easier! Highly recommend and would go back again in a heartbeat.
