The Experience
Once the home of Cardinal Pio III (Pope for only 26 days), this beautiful building has been restored with care and you’ll find something nourishing to look at in every room. You enter through Chiara’s new kitchen where she gives private cookery lessons and prepares delicious breakfasts of home-baked tarts and breads, homemade jam, local pecorino cheeses and cured hams. You’ll also find an honesty bar, a fridge for your own bits and bobs and a comfortable seating area with books on art, philosophy and history in several languages.
Three bedrooms (one suite at the very top) are light and large with smooth linens, deep mattresses and travertine marble floors; bathrooms are spa-like with jacuzzi tubs and roomy, walk-in showers. You’ll feel pampered and Chiara can organise tours of hidden small towns, wine and olive oil tasting, sacred art – just ask. She’ll cook dinner for you too with a bit of notice.
Step out to explore the town.

This historical building has been finely reestablished, rooms are quite and very comfortable, books and artworks are part of the experience. Chiara is the perfect host, being so kind during acceptance and delighting us with a fantastic homemade breakfast. Sarteano is strategically in the middle of the beautiful Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana, with their artistic attractiveness near to be reached. We had a wonderful stay in Todeschini suite, we're planning to return...

We stayed at Palazzo Pio III and what can I say… It was very welcoming, the room was big and clean with a very comfortable bed, the breakfast was international, hearty and all made by Chiara with typical local products. It’s a great spot for visiting lots of beautiful villages. Thank you Chiara for your recommendations and for being so welcoming.

Palazzo Pio 3 is an wonderful place to stay. Exactly in the centrum of Sarteano. The Rooms are amazing, better then in the photos !! Everything is taken care of down to the smallest detail, the bed is very comfortable, even the sofa bed. I have been there only for one night for Easter, the temperature inside was perfect. The room I was in has a special bathroom very large and with jacuzzi and emotional shower! The owner Chiara is very helpful and friendly. I hope to come back soon to have more time to enjoy one of those Rooms and Val D' Orcia. Thank you Maria Grazia

Location
The neighbourhood
Around the corner you'll find Chiostro Cennini, an atmospheric little restaurant with an outdoor courtyard where Chiara's brother Guido sometimes plays music with his group. Hire e-bikes and cycle through Val di Chiana and some of the most lovely scenery in the region, learn about pecorino cheese production, visit some superb wineries, take the train to Rome or Florence in one hour.
Local points of interest from Guido & Chiara Pietrella
- You are in the center of an ancient and enchanting village that is still "real", where you find many tourists, but also young and elderly inhabitants who maintain their lives and habits. Discover the real life of Tuscany!
- Medieval games, concerts and musical events, parties and shows are organised especially in summer. Throughout the year you can visit the Castle, the ancient theatre, the museum and one of the best preserved Etruscan tombs in the world.
- You are in a strategic point! From Sarteano you can go to stunning Valdorcia, with Pienza, Montepulciano, Bagno Vignoni, Radicofani or San Casciano, or visit Umbria starting from Trasimeno Lake and Cortona up to Perugia, Assisi and Gubbio.
- You are also in full thermal land. A few steps from here you can enjoy Terme of Chianciano, Montepulciano, San Casciano Bagni, Bagni San Filippo and Bagno Vignoni. What are you waiting for to dive into relaxation?
- And if you are interested in cities, Siena, Florence and Rome are about an hour away. In Siena’s Cathedral you will find more information about the Pope who was born in this house, including the first forms of printed books commissioned by himself.
- And if you are a lover of sport and nature you are still in the right place! You can delve into the surrounding hills, up to the lakes of Valdichiana or the enchanting expanses of Valdorcia through numerous trekking, horseback or cycle touring routes.

Introducing
Guido & Chiara Pietrella
Delightful Chiara is a journalist with a passion for cooking. She is the author of a series of cookery books with special recipes for those with food intolerances. She and her brother Guido (a musician) have returned to their native Sarteano and have poured love into restoring the palazzo. They both live a short distance away so you will have the house to yourselves in the evenings.
We had a delightful stay. Chiara was most helpful and went out of her way to assist us. The room is just stunning, beautifully furnished, light and airy. You’re situated right in the heart of Sarteano old town which I will never tire of exploring. Excellent restaurants, cafes and bars are the icing on the cake. And the epic Val D’Orcia and Cetona with their natural hot spas are only a short drive away. We will be back!
