The Experience
Utterly unwind in this tiny hamlet with uninterrupted views of the woodland surrounding you. You’re in the grounds of a medieval castle and you’ll feel decidedly romantic. Pale cream stone encases this former olive mill and once inside an informal elegance makes hours spent lounging on the comfortable sofas easy. Plonk yourself next to the pile of books and games and indulge.
Seasonal fruits, the estate’s own wine and day one’s breakfast comes as standard. Break your fast on the private patio or picnic at your favourite spot – with 1200 hectares you’ve plenty to choose from. The country-style kitchen makes cooking a breeze. Rikke can organise a local to whip up something seasonal and delicious – you’re welcome to join in and master some local dishes.
You’re in isolation here but adventure can be found; explore local hamlets on foot or rented bike and a train can take you to Rome and Florence for gelato and city life.

My parents and I stayed at Castello di Montegiove for a week and had a lovely time. We chose the 3 BR apartment which gave us plenty of space and had everything we needed. Rikke and Enzo were wonderful and warm hosts and the Castle was located in a beautiful albeit remote part of Umbria nearly bordering Tuscany. Rikke gave us a complimentary tour of the castle grounds followed by wine tasting which we thoroughly enjoyed. The property also had a gorgeous pool, unfortunately we had some cold days during our visit. Overall, we had a fantastic stay.

Nice historical place. Quite, with a pool with a view. Airconditioning in the bedrooms. Great place to visit Perugia, Siena, Assisi, Orvieto, the waterfall of Cascata delle Marmore and Bagnoregio. You can parc the car next to the house. A wine tasting and visit to the castle is also included. Rikke and Lorenzo are great. Always helping, working and making great wines. You can ask Rikke everything and she helps very quick.

Castello di Montegiove was a lovely place to stay and we had a very relaxing fortnight there as a family of four. The apartment was well equipped and comfortable. The outside space was stunning and the walk to the swimming pool around the ramparts of the castle quite magical. Easy to drive to the Umbrian cities as well as Rome and Florence for interesting days out. Rikke and Lorenzo were fantastic hosts organising a tour and truffle hunt for us; would definitely recommend a stay in this wonderful place!

Location
The neighbourhood
Explore the hamlet of Montegiove - a jewel complete with church, Norcineria butchers and a bar. Just 15 minutes down the street is Paolo’s wine bar - enjoy salami, formaggi and a delicious red with the panoramic views from the terrace. There’s truffle hunting and wine tasting on the Estate and wooded walks to Greppolischietto to spy Lake Trasimeno from afar. The extraordinary ex Franciscan convent of La Scarzuola is a 3km stroll; it was converted in the 50s to a surreal, fantastical space used for summer theatrical performances – ask Rikke to book a tour.
Local points of interest from Rikke Misciattelli
- Wine tasting at the castle. We offer wine tasting and guided tours of the castle for all our guests. Come and see how we make our wines while we tell you the fascinating history of the Castello di Montegiove.
- La Scarzuola. An old Franciscan convent restored and converted by architect Tommaso Buzzi with all his funny architectural ideas and project.
- Orvieto. The most beautiful hill top town with a gigantic striped duomo, a well with a spiral staircase made for donkeys many years ago and a funicular/ tram that will transport you up to the town from the train station.
- Citta della Pieve. A charming busy town with schools, shops and the most narrow street in the world called Via Bacciedonne. Our favourite town with some of the best restaurants in the area.
- Rent a bike or go trekking in the amazing nature reserve around and below the castle and village of Montegiove.
- Montegiove is half way from Rome and Florence so it is easy to do day trips to both. You can leave the car at the train station in Fabro/Ficulle and enjoy a relaxing trip or you can drive yourself.

Introducing
Rikke Misciattelli
Good food and wine-making are Rikke and Lorenzo’s passions; our kinds of people. You’ll be hard-pressed to receive a warmer welcome from these two; ask for a tour of their wine cellar and of course a sample of your own. The Marquises returned from Denmark to renovate the family castle and its outbuildings. They’re on hand to recommend woodland walks, bike tours and excursions.
We had an amazing stay at Castello di Montegiove in October 2023 and again in October 2024. The house is amazing with great views and very nice decor inside. Everything works perfect and the hosts are friendly and very helpful. We highly recommend a stay and visit at this very special place!
